Jem’s Nursery

With the help of my husband, my parents, and my sister Halli, we made a nice little space for Jem.

The crib, made by my dad, Brad Smith. Mobile, from Peru. String of pom poms made by me. Big pillow from thrift shop, little pillow from Africa.

Bookshelf, a hand-me-down from my old studio space. Vintage lamp shade. Caterpillar made by my friends Beth, small Zebra from africa.

The pull down changing table, made by Josh Trott, my husband. When Jem gets older we can shift it down and cut the let shorter for a craft table (the changing pad is removable).

The lizard is from Thailand.

I found this rocking chair at a thrift store, and reupholstered it using fabric from Proud Mary

New warp

Right before going into labor with Jem, I put a new warp on my loom, in preparation for an arts festival that I’ll be in. I started weaving some new pieces a couple weeks ago, it’s slow moving but I’m making some progress. Sticking with the pre-printing that I’ve been doing, using some similar patterns as before, just on a bigger format, these will be 3′x5′ or bigger. I’ll post the finished products on here and on Etsy.

Make a baby, make a quilt

I have been pretty slow lately with my blog postings. This is why:

I had a baby! His name is James, but we call him Jem. He has kept me pretty busy, but I’m still weaving a few hours a day. Look for upcoming post about my new rugs.

While I was pregnant with Jem, I made my first quilt ever:

The fabric was given to me by my sister in law, Kimiko, from Uganda. It was machine pieced and hand quilted.

Appreciative Customer

I sold a lavender rug to a nice Brooklyn woman, and she gave me some good feedback. Thanks Deanna

I am so happy with this rug! It is beautifully crafted, sturdy, and ties the whole room together. It arrived so quickly, overall just a lovely experience! Thank you so much

This is the link to the piece that was sold.

More rugs

I just finished up some new rugs. I have been experimenting with edging techniques. As well as using brighter colored fabrics. I’m looking forward to making some bigger rugs next, with different print designs.

Check them out here, and get more photos and details on my etsy page!

Green and Yellow Diamonds rug

Green and Yellow Diamonds rug

The above two photos are of a nice little rug. Maybe my favorite. I think that this in how I’m going to do my edges from now on; it’s very secure and looks clean with a bit of indigenous edge.

Colored Diamonds

Colored Diamonds

The above two images are pictures of a rug that I call “Colored Diamonds”. I know, the names of my rugs need a little help. The pattern from this one was inspired by a painting that my brother made. I like the cool, as in, not warm, colors and the subtle pattern.

orange and brown diamond

The above two images are of another new rug which I like a lot for how bold the pattern is and for the color choice. It’s fun and classy.

All moved in

Although the move from Part Time Studios wasn’t geographically far, it has taken a while to settle into my new home studio. I’m still not quite there, I’m in need of some inspirational decoration. The walls right now are pretty bare but that will take time to change, seeing as I’m a stumble-upon-it kinda girl.

Have a look at my space so far (sorry, I am definitely not a photographer, but this will give you the gist)

Allow me to introduce myself

Here it is. The Home Terrain website. I’ll be posting the things that I’m working on, explaining how they are made, and why I’m making them. Here’s a couple to check out. If you like them, they’re for sale! Also, stayed tuned for more. I just have to snap a few pictures first.

Red and Black

I was inspired by the printing process ikat to add patterns to my rugs. I did this by printing the warp with wooden blocks. The warp are the long strings that run the length of the rug. The patterns come out more clearly in some colors than others, which creates a fun effect. That’s me reading textiles and materials, I read that book all the time.
